She hoped it would stay strong, even-though she wanted out. He knew it would break, though he hoped it would not. She thought there was no connection, he thought it was too strong to be true. She cared but never said so. He wanted to believe how much she cared, though couldn't force himself to believe the unspoken truth.  It seemed perfect at first, but then the distance grew like the vast sky, the sparks died out slowly, the sudden glances disappeared and the soft smiles faded away. They still hid it from the world, acted like nothing was wrong.

It should have worked out, that's what she thought.
We shouldn't be together, that's what he thought.

She thought the end was near, he thought it'd never be over. They thought they were meant to be, but they knew somewhere something was wrong.

'Then why are we still together?' he whispered quietly in the deafening silence.
'Why isn't this working?' She asked to the reflection of her broken self.

Never did they talk about the annoying silence, the never caught glances, the upside smiles, the disturbing rhythm of each other's breathing beside their own. They both knew something was wrong, they both knew they should talk.

'It's just me' she always thought.
'It's only me' he always whispered.

She wanted to stay but why was it so hard? He wanted to go but why couldn't he leave?

She was ending it, he knew that. He wanted it, she knew that. But was there anything they could have done?

Then it was over. He stayed while she walked away.
He hoped it would have stayed strong, but it was already broken. She never thought it would break, but it was already broken.
